费穆的《小城之春》站在中国民族文化及其传统的一边,吸纳了现代电影的种种观念与技法,吸收了其他影片特别是戏曲片的长处,以其舒缓的节奏、富于变换的长镜头和空间表现,直接传达出大量叙事难以表达的思想信息,形成奇特、复杂、含蓄的表演特点。诗文艺传统在电影中的复苏与再现,使电影艺术达到中国古典美学中诗的境界。它具有中国电影的民族性特征,是费穆电影艺术水平的高峰。
