There are many disadvantages with electronic circuits for resistance welding, resulting in reduced energy input and reduced welding quality. A manufacturer in London designed a line to overcome these problems. Semiconductor resistance welding controllers typically consist of a manually operated timer which switches on an ordinary switch or semiconductor main line switch to energize the primary winding of a matching welding transformer. This technology has evolved into a power synchronization system (Figure 1) that includes a set of select pulse weeks (typically 1 to 9 weeks) and a phase controller. The phase controller regulates the voltage in each positive and negative half-wave (ie, the size of the heat input).
