叶德辉说“吾谓古人以图书并称,凡有书必有图。”明清小说中的插图更是大量的存在。小说中那些异彩纷呈的插图,发挥着文本不可替代的功能,它不单单能解释说明小说的文本,对于人物刻画、故事情节、情感表达等更是起到了有力的支撑作用,同时可以让人们在阅读的过程中减少疲劳感发挥着无以取代的作用。明清小说插图在当时的美学理念和艺术内涵相当深刻,是一种通俗却不庸俗的的艺术形态,为后来插图的设计提供了参考。
