British law, common law and statutory law have all long established the system of protection of consumers. One of the earliest enactments, the most relevant piece of legislation, is the 1893 Act on the Sale of Goods. The law has now been reformulated as the 1979 Sale of Goods Act. The following refers to the sale of goods law, both refer to the 1979 law of sale of goods. However, one of the limitations of this law is that there must be a contractual relationship between the parties in order to be able to secure the protection it provides. Most transactions of this nature are now subject to the 1979 Act on the Sale of Goods.
