Since the first report of cotton bollworm Antho-nomus grandis Boheman endangering cotton, there have been notable inferences about the origin and route of transmission of the cotton boll weevil (Towrlsend 1895, Fry-xell and Lukefahr 1967). One of the difficulties encountered in trying to answer any of these questions is that there is no known species similar to the Mexican boll weevil and thus can not be taxonomically, ecologically and biogeograpically . Burke (1964) has named the Mexican boll weevil from the Anthonomorphu s Dietz subfamily (A.), the most closely related phylogenetic tree.
