As with every year, organic chemists will find it increasingly impossible to select relevant data in the intelligence oceans when it comes to listing the most important achievements of the year in their field of study (Luckenbach, Angew. Chem., 93,876 (1981)). It is not easy to come up with an annual review and direction in all fields, so an annual review can only be made in the light of subjective choices. The new natural product Identifying the subject of study in natural product chemistry is particularly straightforward. Another outstanding achievement in elucidating structural work is the identification of the structure and absolute configuration of Kija-nimicins. Kijanimicin is a new class of antibiotics isolated from Actinomadura Kijaniata. Its molecular skeleton contains tetronic acid and has antitumor activity.
