当代著名的媒介文化研究学者劳伦斯·格罗斯伯格从斯图亚特·霍尔的“两个全球化时代”理论出发,在经验层面以提供反例的方式论证了“文化帝国主义”/“麦当劳化”理论对解释全球化时代“媒介图景”的无效性。格罗斯伯格使我们认识到“文化帝国主义”/“麦当劳化”理论的不足之处,然其以全球化进程中存在的部分本土化“事实”去否定“文化帝国主义”/“麦当劳化”理论可能带给我们以思想和现实启示的做法,不仅显示出美国媒介文化研究偏重经验事实、批判性较弱的特点,亦有故意回避当前文化弱势国家存在“文化帝国主义”和“麦当劳化”这一“事实”之嫌。
