Chianumbe Hydroelectric Project is an integral part of Tana River development in Kenya. The project consists of a main earth-rock dam of 112m in height, an auxiliary dam of 45m in height, an 8km long diversion tunnel and a 48m (length) × 20m (width) × 33.5m (average height) underground power station. Power plant design installed capacity of 140MW, delivered in August 1987. The project was built on Precambrian basement rocks that suffered strong regional metamorphism and tectonic deformation. There are phyllic feldspathic rocks and banded mafic mixed rocks in the area accompanied by granitic gneiss and biotite granite or metasomatous mixed rocks. The former is a product of single-phase or multi-phase mixed lithification, the latter due to intense deep magmatic penetration and intrusion of unconformity granite mats and bedrock. Dam area has a number of faults through.
