一早在六十年代初,世界各国就有许多学者发表文章,对传统语言教学中无视学生的学习目的和需要,一律偏重文学的做法提出了疑议。有人认为不宜让大量的以英语为工具的学生攻读文学课程,有人指出学生对不现实或不适当的英语课程感到乏味。在这种背景下,不少学者跃跃欲试,立志闯出一条新路来。经过数年的孕育,到六十年代末期,专业语言教学(Special-purpose languageteaching)开始引起人们的重视,专业英语(ESP=English for Specific Purposes)亦应运而生。1969年,智利学者Ewer和Latorre率先编写出《科技英语基础教程》(?)A Course in Basic Scientific English)一书。该教程注重科技语言的特点,书中选择的句型结构、词汇语义均属科技文体
Early in the early 1960s, many scholars in various countries of the world published articles that raised questions about ignoring students’ learning purposes and needs in traditional language teaching and placing emphasis on literature. Some people think it is not appropriate for a large number of English-speaking students to pursue literary courses, while others point out that students are bored of unrealistic or inappropriate English classes. In this context, many scholars eager to determine a new road. After several years of inception, the special-purpose language teaching (Special-purpose language teaching) began to attract people’s attention by the end of the sixties. ESP (English for Specific Purposes) came into being as well. In 1969, Chilean scholars Ewer and Latorre took the lead in compiling A Course in Basic Scientific English. The tutorial focuses on the characteristics of science and technology language, the sentence structure selected in the book, lexical semantics are science and technology style
