盆景艺术的社会功用的探讨至今不是热门话题。在一些人眼中,这门艺术大自然了。似乎所能表现的也很有限,只有修心养性、装点建筑内外空间和改善局部生态环境这么点大不大小不小的作用。这种传统观点的承袭,一直约束人们对这门艺术有新的、全面的、深入的认识和探求。全球性盆景热的兴起,包含着人们对生态环境遭严重破坏可能产生的可怕后果的担忧,反映了人们住生存问题上的慎重选择。一个优美、合理、和谐的自然环境。它是人类生存所必需,也是人类历史发展之必然。它实质上是人类生产力的发展和人类施于自然界的种种作为的反馈,迫使人类重新认识,对原先在生存环境问题上的盲目和漠不关心作出的反省。
