北宋至金代,各地民窑出产了大量水波纹瓷枕,枕面水波纹无生物伴生,枕侧图案往往较枕面更为复杂,为纹饰史上独特现象。其原因主要包括三点:宋金民俗认为梦“水”为吉兆,梦水的期盼以瓷枕为媒介外化为水波纹主题;当时瓷枕为夏日寝具,水波纹强调了瓷枕消暑清脑的功能;水波纹工艺较简单,生产效率高,适应了春夏之交瓷枕大量上市的市场竞争。
