1996年1月3日和8日,江西省彭泽县长江马湖堤相继发生两起特大崩岸事件。长江水利委员会组成专家组在现场进行了详细考察,并进行了地球物理勘探,查明崩岸的原因主要是不利的地质结构、长江对岸坡的长期冲蚀淘刷、深泓迫近江堤、堤内鱼塘积水、长江水位降落较快以及堤基加载和砂土震动液化等因素综合作用造成的。此外,对新堤的地质条件也作出了初步评价。
