Researchers know more about HIV than about any other virus. However, developing a vaccine that is resistant to HIV infection remains the same challenge as it was when the virus was discovered in 1983. Unlike the human body’s response to most acute viral infections, the innate immune response does not destroy HIV. This feature makes it hard for researchers to figure out exactly what should be caused by an effective vaccine
