Advances in research on Agaricus bitorquis mating and breeding systems,and the breeding of new strains of this mushroom both in China and overseas,have been reviewed.Progress in our understanding of the genetic basis of homokaryotic fruiting,nuclear migration and mitochondrial inheritance,has been presented.The three main groups of A.bitorquis strains (temperate,bridging and tropical) categorized on the basis of mating behavior,and the distribution of homogenic and heterogenic incompatibility within the groups,have been discussed.Existing problems have been identified,and proposals made for future research.
