中国文化对世界的根本态度,是信仰一个超越的本原。其特点是并不确信或深究神圣意志结构,以制度的形式来表达人与神圣意志的沟通;以此反复加强对神圣意志的确认和信仰;同时满足于敬拜、冥思、敬而远之、敬而用之、思而修身;进而导致中国信仰的现实呈现不得不依赖世俗的社会结构甚至是权力制度的刻意安排,单纯的信仰无法获得宗教的表达。中国儒教就是这样一种“信仰表达方式”。正是这种似乎界限不清的概念,其中蕴涵有极其丰富的社会内涵。
