As a generation who grew up in the 1960s, Chen Ran refused to inherit the sense of social responsibility and mission of older writers. Writing itself becomes the motivation, support and ultimate goal of writing. She rejected the grand vision of history as a background and rejected mass carnival and subsidence. Refusing the excitement of a massive, sprawling consumerism, she placed herself in a private space where she was able to conduct a mighty, personal and mighty writing. This is full of lonely individuals, the pain of survival, potential exploration and expression of personalized experience of existence.
