EMDR is an integrated, client-centered approach to psychotherapy. The method is used to treat psychological problems that are not pathologically based on organic damage and its treatment focuses on the painful memory of the brain’s information processing system. EMDR handles both distressing experiences and experiences and helps clients get the experience and experience they need to achieve a healthier state of mind. An overview of the history, development and research of EMDR is a largely empirically supported treatment. After elaborating the adaptive information processing model, this article illustrates a case-by-case and eight-stage treatment of EMDR with a continuum of case examples. The EMDR technique is primarily to process the current context of pathologically based early memory and ill-functioning and provide a template for future adaptive behavior, including the knowledge and behavior needed to overcome under-skill and / or under-development. The benefits of an integrated EMDR and family system perspective are that it provides the most comprehensive treatment.
