The Chinese delegation to the 2015 Special Olympics World Games arrives in Los Angeles on July 21. The group, made up of 126 members, includes 93 athletes at an average age of 21. They compete in sporting events such as track and field, swimming and football.
The Special Olympics movement was founded in 1968 to foster the acceptance and inclusion of mentally disabled people into communities. Some 200 million people worldwide have a mental disability, constituting the world’s largest disability group.
The Special Olympic World Games represent the movement’s flagship event and are staged every two years, alternating between summer and winter games. This year’s summer games are held from July 25 to August 2 with the participation of 6,500 athletes from a total of 165 countries.
