The application of laccase in forestry industry was discussed. Laccase is a versatile phenol oxidase that is available from white-rot fungi and other natural sources. When laccase reacts with lignin, it exhibits its ability to degrade and polymerise lignin. Through the use of laccase media system (LMS), the range of substrates for laccase reactions can be extended, including phenolic and non-phenolic polymers, which makes them suitable for bio-bleaching. The laccase medium system also helps to remove resinous and phenolic impurities, as well as removing dyes from wood and water. Laccase technology can be applied throughout the papermaking chain, from pulping to re-fiber recycling, as well as wastewater Processing aspects. In fact, most of the published studies and applications of laccase media in the forestry industry have been linked to pulp and paper production, with a focus on the application of laccase media systems in bio-bleaching and wastewater treatment.
