Two cancer research centers in the United States have successfully produced specific liposomes that can target tumor cells to reveal them for better detection, or to directly introduce cancer drugs into cancer cells. The liposomes used at the University of California, San Francisco (one of two cancer research centers) are 0.4 μm wide phosphatidylcholine, cholesterol, and 4-(P-maleimidop henyl) butyrylphosphatidylethanolamine particles. The team used these liposomes loaded with a methotrexate derivative that attached a monoclonal antibody to mouse leukemia cells and targeted liposomes to leukemia cells in vitro.
