One of the important differences that Frank Hardy has had since his first novel was published in 1950 is not unlike that of contemporary novelists, is that he has openly declared himself a communist. Not only that, he has also shown in his writing, media image, and public behavior the disrespectful disregard of traditional statutes and the contempt for the bureaucracy that make him one of the most challenging and controversial in Australian literature Alternative sound. Almost all of his work is on the subject of gambling and radical politics, which are not well regarded by Australian critics and whose works are often devalued or underestimated. This article discusses the imprint of Hardy’s work on gambling in social, political and cultural contexts, and concludes that the negative evaluation of Hardy’s work is mainly due to the ideological structure embedded in the works.
