Due to the low cost of biological processes, the suitability of handling low-grade ores and their high level of flexibility, attention has been given in recent years to hydrometallurgy and mineral processing. Bacteria and their metabolites regulate the surface properties of minerals to make them hydrophobic or hydrophilic. This surface modification method can be used for flotation and flocculation of minerals. Bacteria can also dissolve different precious metals in ores. This article will discuss the role of bacteria and their metabolites as surface conditioners in mineral extraction. In addition, the ability of certain bacteria to adsorb toxic metal ions and degrade toxic compounds in industrial discharges has also been examined.
