Picasso, a master of modern art, was influenced by African tribal masks during the African period (1906-1909), while Paul Gaudín captivated Tahiti with fascination. The New York Museum of Modern Art’s 1984 exhibition, “The Art of Primitivism of the Twentieth Century: Tribal-Modern Marriage,” presented and summarized the impact of tribal cultures in Africa, North America, and Oceania on Western art.
