Primitivism is a derivative of modernity. Picasso, a master of modern art, was influenced by African tribal masks during the African period (1906-1909), while Paul Gaudín captivated Tahiti with fascination. Max Ernst created the sculpture “head of head” that resembles the Sayan masks. The New York Museum of Modern Art’s 1984 exhibition, “The Art of Primitivism of the Twentieth Century: Tribal-Modern Marriage,” presented and summarized the impact of tribal cultures in Africa, North America, and Oceania on Western art.
