Objectives To compare the socio-demographic, risk behaviors and HIV, HCV and syphilis infections among drug users recruited in different ways. METHODS: From May to July 2004, drug users were recruited from Xichang community of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province to investigate their socio-demographic characteristics. In the recent 3 months, they shared direct and indirect intravenous drug use with injecting devices, and sexual behavior in the past 6 months . Blood samples were collected for HIV, HCV and syphilis antibody testing. Results Of the 451 drug addicts recruited, 73.8% and 26.2% were recruited through peer recruitment and other means, respectively. The differences in gender, ethnicity, age, education level and marital status were statistically significant among those who recruited in different ways. Frequency of drug abuse by intravenous injection, frequency of heroin inhalation, frequency of drug use by mixed heroin, frequency of shared needles or syringes, frequency of sharing needles or syringes, frequency of shared drug containers, frequency of shared tampons, frequency of drugs loaded before or after sharing syringes , As well as among those who recruited in different ways with fixed / temporary unprotected sex, sexual partners with sexual partners and new sexual partners. There were statistically significant differences in HIV, HCV and syphilis among drug abusers recruited in different ways. Conclusions Response-driven sampling is an effective way of recruiting drug users and it is easy to recruit drug users from ethnic and high-risk behaviors through their peers.
