《上海众生相》是一本仅九十多页的小册子。但就是这本薄薄的小册子,从中折射出20世纪40年代上海低层民众生活既龌龊不堪,又悲惨凄凉的一页。大凡提起40年代的上海世相,多会将目光不约而同地集中在一些政界商界达官贵人或者名流要人的生活层面,出现的不是名门望族、小姐名媛、少爷小开,就是帮会老大、黑道白道中的各式人等。显然,那样的上海世相肯定是不全面的,因为这其中缺少了上海底层的众生相。这个层面固然有著名画家张乐平画笔下的流浪儿童三毛,但在关于民国后期旧上海世相的整体描述上,这方面的内容不成比例。这本《上海众生相》对四十年代的上海世相——当然,主要是彼时上海底层的社会众生相有较为具体的叙述,它的史料价值也恰在于此。
