闲章指镌刻姓名、斋室、藏书、职官印等以外的印章。由秦汉时的吉语印演变而来,宋元以后风气盛行,特别是明清以后的闲章颇盛行。近代的闲章更是名家辈出,流派纷呈,对闲章的应用达到了巅峰,闲章的流行主要以吉语,格言、诗句、自戒之词等文化形式表现。大多表达个人心意和理想抱负。闲章一般包括“引首章”、“压角章”、“吉语章”、“警言章”、“收藏章”、“鉴赏章”、“纪年肖形章”以及“斋、堂、馆、阁居室章”等等。其形式不拘,大小不一,一般或大于姓名用章,或等同于姓名用章。
