1962年在贺兰山下淡灰鈣土上试种甘薯,获得成功。2分地,共收了八、九百斤甘薯(合亩产4,000多斤)。主要栽培措施,不过是施牛粪200斤,草木灰400斤,两次追施硫铵20斤,中耕培土2次,灌水3次。获得成果的原因,在很大程度上是自然条件较为适宜。该地区6~9月的溫度,为18~25.5℃,适于甘薯生长。昼夜溫差较大,有利于甘薯水分养分的吸收和积累。6~7月,10厘米內的地溫为26.9~27.4℃,对块根膨胀非常有利。但4~5月份的溫度较低,为18~19℃,如何育苗是一个关鍵问題。此外,光照较为充裕,有利植物的光合作用。甘薯生长期的5~9月,光照时数比北京多2.235个小时,晴天日数多34.6天,因此甘薯生长发育较好。甘薯生长期间,所需水量约为450毫米,而本区5~9月的降水量仅有160毫米左右,相
