通过从语音角度探讨湘西乡话的内部差异,列举了声韵调10个主要差别,并在此基础上,对比周边汉语方言的情况,分析差异产生的原因。认为乡话受周边汉语方言的影响,从边界到腹地正在发生语音分化,并将这种变化情况分为三种：带区域性特征的语言波的扩散、方言的地缘水缘关系的影响、双语区强势方言的渗透。
