In the past, the problem of static correction for calculating seismic reflection data at a common depth point has been discussed. There is now a new approach that is relevant to the various existing instruments. This method involves using cross-correlation calculations to find the time shift that will align the records for each point of total depth. These time shifts are represented by surface corrections, including the correction for each shot position and each receiver position; the remaining kinematic correction for each common depth point; and the fixed correction for each common depth point. These simultaneous equations form an overdetermined set that can solve unknown motion-and-static corrections. The solution to the least square error with obvious uncertainty about these equations is discussed and the solution is proposed.
