回溯欧洲歌剧历史,法国大歌剧无疑在其中占有重要的地位——华丽的场面、跌宕的剧情、优美的音乐、精彩的舞蹈,并佐以历史或政治事件。歌剧是一门综合性的舞台艺术,大歌剧则力图将歌剧的各个部分发挥到极致,一个“大”字将这种面面俱到的极致概而括之。因此想要写出一部包括5幕,演出时间将近5个小时的大歌剧,对任何作曲家而言都是个艰巨的任务。贾科莫·迈耶贝尔(Giacomo Meyerbeer)是法国大歌剧最具代表性的作曲家——一位出生在德国,长期生活在法国,又在意大利苦心钻研罗西尼歌剧多年的音乐家。
