The story of the American Environmental Association started more than 50 years ago with a campaign to protect cormorants, a lovely bird. In the 1960s, scientists in Long Island, the United States, were surprised to find that the number of local young cormorants dropped sharply to one-seventh of the normal number due to unknown reasons. In the meantime, the same alarming drop occurred in the numbers of other birds of prey, such as bald eagles and peregrines.
