It is feasible to extract organically bound gold from surface sediments using 5% sodium hypochlorite. For lake and river sediments with high organic matter, gold recovery from the organic phase is close to quantitative analysis. For river sediments and soils with low organic matter content, gold recovery is complicated by the release of gold by adsorption of the inorganic components of the sample. It is possible to recover less than 70% of organically bound gold for these materials. The accuracy of this method is about 6% for a 10 g sample of 53.4 ppb river sediment. About 14% when using 5 grams of river sediment sample. The results obtained from all experiments show that gold in sediments and soils mostly exists in the form of organically bound gold.
