Mao Tse-tung once said: “Without the army of the people, there will be no people’s all.” The Nanchang Uprising in 1927 set off the first shot armed by the Chinese Communist Party against the Kuomintang reactionaries. This sound of gunshots, which astonished the world and awakened the sleeping Chinese nation, marked China’s entry into a new era in which the Chinese Communist Party independently led the armed revolution and marked the birth of a new type of people’s army in China. The nascent people’s army, backed by hostile forces both at home and abroad, has rescued it under unimaginable difficulties and pressures and has written a long and difficult history of China’s struggle with its solid foundation and rock-solid perseverance. On July 11, 1933, the Provisional Central Government of the Chinese Soviet Republic decided to August 1 as the anniversary of the establishment of the Chinese Workers ’and Peasants’ Red Army. Since then, August 1 formally became the People’s Army’s military establishment. 2017 marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. This special issue opens a special column to pay tribute to the heroic People’s Liberation Army.
