The article first introduces the features and classification of functional speech and points out that although functional speech plays a secondary role in the text, it is still one of the important parts of the text. Functional speech is an obvious verbal markup, which can make the logical relationship between textual sentences appear. In the teaching of college English writing, the correct use of functional speech can help students express their attitudes properly in the process of writing, convey relatively consistent and logical information, and guide readers to better understand the whole text. The reader can also establish a closer exchange of ideas with the author by focusing on the use of functional speech.
