While the vast majority of human plague cases in the United States are diagnosed in the same geographical area as the infected, some plague victims either travel to places outside of their infected state either during the incubation period or when ill. Because these people may travel to places where plague does not occur naturally, the plague may not be taken into account at the time of diagnosis, posing a potential hazard to the patient and the people who are exposed to it. This article describes a case of plague that occurred in 1980 and illustrates some of the problems in handling travelers’ plague.
