Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬乱). Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.
The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes and six engravings (版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen. In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape (風景) painting. Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said,” Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.
( )26. The text is mainly about _______.
  A. Benjamin’s visit to Philadelphia
  B. Williams’ influence on Benjamin
  C. the beginning of Benjamin’s life as an artist
  ( )27. Benjamin’s first brush was made from _______.

Not long ago, someone asked the dad of a young pop star what his son would have done if he hadn’t become a singer. The father said he had never considered anything else. 31. ________
There had been no Plan B. I told this to my son Marty, who is studying musical theater at college, when he is thinking about a second major (专业) in business or teaching. “Just study what you’re interested in,” I said. “But what if I can’t make it?” he asked. “It’ll still be worth it,” I answered. My friends think I’m crazy. 32. ________ “Times are hard; get your son into something that can lead to a good job,” a friend told me.
Of course I understand their meanings, and want to protect my son. But why should he spend his “best years” studying things that hardly hold his interest? Is that really a wise use of his time? I think fear leads nowhere, while enthusiasm (热情) can lead anywhere. The wisest parents are the ones who direct their children toward the things that already interest them. 33. ________
When Marty stepped into the most competitive (有竞争性的) field, I was worried about his future. Yet I have watched him grow. I know what he has done to run after his dream, and how much he has enjoyed the process. 34. ________ But I believe that looking for one’s own dream is one’s only real chance of happiness. I’d rather he went ahead than hung back (犹豫,退缩). 35. ________ Plans B, C, D, and E will always be there. Get Plan A.

Four ways to have a good school life
Your schooldays should be some of the best and happiest days of your life. How can you get the most from them, and be sure you do not waste this great chance to learn?
Be active (积极的) at school. Don’t say things are difficult or boring. Take interest in school life and your school subjects. Join lots of activities. Put up your hands quickly in class. Go around the school with a big smile. If you are not working, you are wasting your time at school. Teachers cannot make everything enjoyable (令人愉快的). Keep fit. If you don’t eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed late and don’t have enough sleep, you will be sleepy in class. Play enough sports every day in order to keep your body strong.
Face the problem. Do not say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get back in front. You cannot finish the race if you rest all the time. Everyone fails some exams, loses some matches and has bad days. Don’t make small problems very big and important. Don’t forget to ask for help. You are young, and no one thinks you must do everything quite well!
Spend the weekends. Don’t waste time lying in bed on Saturday or Sunday morning. Go and play sports, get together with friends in the park to relax, learn to play the piano, or help someone with problem. If you don’t want to go out, there are also a lot of things to do. You may read a book, practice English or help Mum with housework.
Follow our advice, and have a happy school life!
