Hawaii’s coffee plantation is dominated by the Kona area. The coffee plantations are located in a narrow zone of 700-2,200 feet above sea level. The climate varies from low altitude to dry, warm and well-lit areas, while high altitude areas are extremely humid, chilly and cloudy. Most of the soil here is developed from volcanic ash and lava, dominated by “aa” lava, which is a fragmented, porous lava flow and in some places is “Pahoehoe” lava. The latter is a dense and continuous layer of lava that is extremely hard to grow and harder to grow where there is no topsoil at the top of the formation. Many of the ground is very soilless, and if coffee is planted in these areas, the topsoil must be filled with planting holes to grow
