纤维制造对聚酰亚胺聚合物的要求极为苛刻的,除必须得到很高分子量外,还要求聚合物溶液绝对均匀,工艺过程中的投料方式和聚合度的控制,都有严格的条件。制取聚酰亚胺纤维有熔融纺丝和溶液纺丝两种方法。熔融纺丝通过合成热塑性聚酰亚胺,再进行熔融纺丝。该工艺的优势是纺丝机械设备成熟,但由于合成的热塑性聚酰亚胺分子量不高,得到的聚酰亚胺纤维力学性能较差。溶液纺丝是要先用单体分别合成聚酰亚胺溶液或聚酰胺酸原液,再进行溶液纺丝,然后经一步法或两步法纺丝工艺制取聚酰亚胺纤维。
