煤炭是重要的能源,在我国整个能源结构中占80%以上。归中国煤炭工业发展十分缓慢,仅在少部份省区有几处初具规模的煤矿,临解放时年产原煤仅3000多万吨,勘探工作落后,装备陈旧,只有少量比较简陋的日本利根300m手把钻机和蒸汽钻。新中国成立以后,党和国家十分重视煤炭工业的发展,至今煤产量已增加了20多倍,煤田勘探工作随之有了很大发展,在各省区建立了煤田勘探队100多个,开动上千台钻机,完成钻探工程量6800多万米,探明了数千亿吨储量,为我国煤炭工业的发展提供了可靠的资源。作为煤田勘探的重要方法——钻探工程也有了显著的变化和发展,并且除从事煤田地质勘探外,还进行井筒冻结孔、矿山注浆孔、水井、工程地质勘察、露天边坡勘探、建筑基础桩等工程施工。
