情态动词是表达人际功能的重要手段,各类情态动词的使用,有助于说话者调节与听者的关系,并加强说服力,从而实现相关的人际功能。根据Halliday功能语法中人际功能的理论框架,从情态动词的使用对马丁·路德·金的就职演讲进行人际意义分析,可以发现情态动词的选择对人际意义的实现有极其重要的作用。演讲是演讲者利用有声语言和肢体语言,就特定问题对听众传达信息,实现其话语目的的一种手段。从语言学角度来看,演讲有着丰富的人际意义。该文主要研究马丁·路德·金演讲《我有一个梦中》情态动词的人际意义。
Modal verbs are an important means of expressing interpersonal functions. The use of various modal verbs helps the speaker adjust the relationship with the listener and enhance the persuasiveness so as to achieve the related interpersonal functions. According to the theoretical framework of interpersonal function in Halliday’s functional grammar, the interpersonal analysis of the inaugural speech of Martin Luther King from the use of modal verbs shows that the choice of modal verbs plays an extremely important role in the interpersonal meaning. Speech is a means for the speaker to use the vocal language and the body language to convey information to the audience on specific issues and achieve the purpose of his speech. From a linguistic point of view, speech has a rich interpersonal meaning. This paper mainly studies the interpersonal meaning of Martin Luther King’s speech “I Have a Dream” modal verb.
