低酚棉(即无毒棉)除收获棉纤维供人类衣着之用外,棉仁中棉酚含量低于国际卫生标准(0.04%),可供人畜直接食用。棉仁蛋白质的含量高达40~50%,而大米、小麦、玉米、花生、大豆等都不及棉子仁。而且人体必须的八种氨基酸在棉仁中既均衡又丰富。不仅如此,棉仁中还含有35%的油脂,棉油中亚油酸的含量高达61%,是其它食用植物油所不及的。棉油中维生素E 的含量特别高,为芝麻、大豆油脂的3—4倍,堪称油中之冠。低酚棉的幼苗、枝叶、铃壳、茎杆都含有丰富的蛋白质,可作发展畜牧业的优质粗饲料。用低酚棉子壳和棉杆粉生产的食用菌无毒,因而在国际市场上倍受青睐。由此可见,低酚棉由于株体内消除了含有棉酚的油腺,不仅改变了棉作物学的分类属性,而且也改变了棉花的经济地位。使它由单一的纤维作物变成棉、油、粮、饲兼用的经济作物。
