Materials exhibiting thermally induced thermothickening or gelling properties in aqueous solutions, I.e. Presenting a substantial viscosity increase upon heating are rather exceptional, as most fluids are characterized by the well-known Arrhenius thermothinning behaviour. In most of cases where thermothickening properties are observed in aqueous solutions, polymers with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behaviour in water are involved. Due to the delicate balance between hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions, these thermosensitive polymers separate out from water upon heating, although they are well-soluble at low temperature.
