学界对上海灵学会的研究多着眼于新旧两立的线性史观,因而无法解释何以不少新式知识分子热衷其道的史实。研究发现,灵学会的成立是民初社会理想幻灭、心态消极、道德焦虑、科学失衡等社会背景的真实折射。部分人士反思近代救亡之路,信仰出现分化,转而重视精神、道德及宗教的作用,表明了近代中国思想演进和道路探索因不同的社会背景而呈现为短暂迂回。
The study of the Shanghai Linguistics Society focuses more on the linear history of both the old and the new and therefore fails to explain the historical facts why so many modern intellectuals are keenly involved. The study found that the establishment of Spiritual Society was the true refraction of the social background such as social disillusionment, negative mentality, moral anxiety and scientific imbalance in the early Republic of China. Some people reflect on the road to salvation in modern times, their beliefs are divided, and their spiritual, moral and religious roles are emphasized. This shows that the evolution of modern Chinese thought and road exploration have been briefly transacted due to different social backgrounds.
