Ishmael Reid is not only one of the finest satirist in the United States, but also a wild, self-fulfilling writer of postmodernism. His work advocates a convergent, open multiculturalism that focuses on the lives and thoughts of African-Americans who are marginalized by mainstream white culture and challenges the dominant white culture. In the novel, he subverts the genres of traditional novels through imitation, which reflects the typical features of postmodern literary works. This article uses the works of Ishmael Reed as an example to discuss the traditional imitation of Western novels. Reid’s postmodernist parody art in his works not only questioned the reappearance of literature, but also paid close attention to such issues as history, politics and culture which are closely related to the marginalized culture, especially to the Afro-American groups and enriched the connotation of the novel creation. The study of Reed’s fictional parody art can better analyze the position of parody art in post-modern literature.
