西方园林界有一句谚语:“无中国花,不成花园。”而在中国植物中,滇西的植物不仅独冠中国,也是全世界植物资源最丰富的地区。现在欧美各国大量栽培的杜鹃、报春、山茶、龙胆、兰花、百合等名花,大多来自滇西北;欧美的许多博物馆和园林、植物研究机构中都收藏有许多云南的植物标本。在中外科学家对中国植物的考察研究中,以英国爱丁堡皇家植物园乔治福莱斯的考察规模最大,历时最长,成就最显著。乔治福莱斯于1873年生于苏格兰农村。自1904年起,他七次到中国云南考察植物,其间历尽千辛万苦,
