Thailand’s automobile industry started relatively late, with a history of approximately 35 years since the early 1960s. Despite the short period of time, the emergence of the automobile industry brought about fundamental changes in Thailand’s industry and economy, thus taking Thailand’s industrial production and economic life towards a key step towards industrialization and modernization. Nowadays, the world’s top 17 automakers attracting 17 million people in the Thousand-Buddha population have settled in Thailand and opened 12 large-scale auto parts supply stations. Thailand has become the largest automobile manufacturing center in Southeast Asia, and it is also the second largest light truck market in the world after the United States. With the rapid growth of the middle class in Southeast Asia, the demand for cars in Asia is increasing day by day. Therefore, all major automobile manufacturers in the world have put their sights on this region. U.S. General Motors took the lead in deciding to expand the company’s share of this potential market. At the end of 1996, officials of the company’s marketing department declared that by the year 2000, GM would increase its original 5% market share to 10%.
