The IAEA has completed a post-accident Chernobyl accident research project related to the transport of radionuclides through land, water and urban environments. The project, VAMP’s “Verification of Environmental Model Prediction Methodology,” was opened in 1988 as part of the IAEA’s coordinated research program and utilizes radioactivity caused by the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 Nuclide transport data. Various authorities in all the countries of the former Soviet Union, all Central and Eastern Europe, collected a large amount of data. Earlier, the data on how radionuclides were transported in the biosphere mainly came from the radioactive fallout of atmospheric nuclear weapon tests.
