一把人生和艺术相联系,以艺术作为人格培育的重要手段是中国传统文化“诗”教、“乐”教的悠久传统。而把艺术境界作为理想人生的重要尺度,崇尚艺术化的生存方式和人生境界,也是中国传统士大夫富有代表性的人生理想。但是,这种对艺术、美和人、人生之关系的态度,这种深蕴于中国传统文化思想中的崇尚艺术化的人生旨趣与理想,始终没有上升为明确的理论话语。20世纪上半叶,在民族命运和民族文化的严峻危机前,经过田汉、宗白华、梁启超、朱光潜、丰子恺、郭沫若等一批初具现代美学意识的中国现代美学家、艺术家的努力,在中国现代美学和文艺思想领域中,“人生艺术化”这个富有理想色彩、在当时不免令人有高蹈之叹的理论命题却逐渐明晰并最终确立。
