丁炔二醇-1,4是重要的基本有机合成中间体。它可作为合成橡胶(丁二烯)、合成纤维(耐纶6,6)、塑料、溶剂、以及农药和药物的原料,同时由于它具有两个活泼的烃基和一个碳-碳三键,能进行多种反应,制成许多新品种。工业上丁炔二醇-1,4的合成是按照列普(Reppe)的方法进行的。乙炔在3—5大气压力下和甲醛水溶液借重金属的乙炔化合物如乙炔铜、乙炔汞、乙炔银等的催化作用,在100℃左右发生反应,得到丁炔二醇和少量丙炔醇。
