Objective: To explore the possibility of treatment of keratoconjunctivitis with submandibular gland pedicled with retrograde artery. METHODS: Autologous submandibular glands (including catheters) pedicled with retrograded arteries were transplanted to the temporal portion of experimental Beagle dogs. The 99mTc nuclide scan monitored the viability of the transplanted submandibular gland, and the grafts were histologically examined 12 weeks after transplantation. Results: Postoperative 99mTc radionuclide scan confirmed the survival of the salivary gland in the transplanted area. Histological examination revealed that acinar cells in the submandibular gland were transplanted atrophy. Conclusion: The treatment of keratoconjunctival xerosis by retrograde artery pedicle submandibular gland transplantation is a suitable and safe treatment.
